Celebrate U.S. Veterans this Holiday Season by Collecting Their Stories

Veterans History Project Encourages Families and Friends to Interview Veterans

As the holiday season approaches, the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress invites volunteers across the country to gather and contribute the stories of U.S. veterans to the project ensuring their experiences are archived and remembered for generations.

"Fall and winter are filled with many gatherings with family and friends," said Monica Mohindra, director of the Veterans History Project. "It’s a great time to see the veterans you know and capture their stories. Veterans Day is an especially meaningful opportunity to start these conversations and invite them to participate in an interview."

When: Oct. 22

Who: Veterans History Project Director Monica Mohindra

Contact: To schedule an interview, contact Joy Egee at joyegee@lmo.com.

The Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress collects, preserves and makes accessible the personal accounts of American veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand their service.

It is a grassroots effort that relies on volunteers to help collect and preserve these invaluable memories. The Veterans History Project collaborates with schools, universities, veterans' organizations, members of Congress and community groups to raise awareness of the program and to collect veterans’ stories. It also engages with the public through social media, events and partnerships with libraries and museums to encourage participation.

Establishing a collection with the Veterans History Project is simple, meaningful and leaves a lasting legacy of service. Volunteers can get involved by visiting loc.gov/vets to access guidelines and resources, including a Field Kit and an instructional video to help volunteers conduct interviews and submit materials. Anyone aged 15 or older can participate, making this an accessible way to preserve veterans’ stories for generations to come.

About the Veterans History Project

Congress created the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress in 2000 to collect, preserve and make accessible the firsthand remembrances of United States veterans from World War I through the more recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and peacekeeping missions so those future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of service.
