Library To Host Monthly Family Days Throughout the Spring and Summer
Events Include Author Conversations from Chelsea Clinton, Rita Williams-Garcia, Meg Medina and George Takei

The Library of Congress will host a new monthly series of Family Days throughout the spring and summer, including focused programming around Women’s History Month, National Library Month and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Families and visitors of all ages are invited to participate in Family Day creative Library collection-focused activities for budding researchers. In addition to special activities connected to relevant Library collections, visitors are invited to explore the various exhibitions on display in the Jefferson Building.

Programming Highlights

March Family Day: Celebrating Women’s History Month

On Saturday, March 9, visiting families are invited to celebrate amazing women in history and in their own lives by working on a take-home project inspired by Library of Congress collections, exhibitions and architecture. Families are invited to draw portraits of women they admire to display on the Family Day Community Mural. Additional activities include transcribing Clara Barton’s personal papers and learning about her various roles as a nurse, educator and writer.

They will take place on the mezzanine level of the Jefferson Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Register here.

Additional offerings:

  • 2 p.m: As part of this month’s Family Day, celebrate Women’s History Month with Chelsea Clinton, bestselling author of the “She Persisted” picture book series; Rita Williams-Garcia, celebrated author of novels for young adults and middle grade readers, including the “She Persisted: Florence Griffith Joyner” chapter book; and Meg Medina, current National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. April Family Day: National Library Month

On Saturday, April 13, families are invited to learn about America’s national library by exploring the significance of libraries in their own lives. A featured activity station will teach families how to sort and organize wide-ranging collection items using the tools that the Library staff use every day.

Activities will be held on the mezzanine level of the Library’s Jefferson Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free, but passes are required for the Jefferson Building. Register here.

May Family Day: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

On Saturday, May 11, hear stories from the Asian American and Pacific Islander community that will inspire visitors to creatively share their own family stories and experiences. Family Day activities will be held on the mezzanine level of the Library’s Jefferson Building from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is free, but passes are required for the Jefferson Building.   • Join Innovator-in-Residence Jeffrey Yo warren for a mask-making workshop, then use the mask to visit VR "hidden portals" featuring historic Chinatowns around the U.S. For ages 6-12. Register Here.  
     
  • 2 p.m: Hear from award-winning author, actor and civil rights advocate George Takei about his new book, “My Lost Freedom: A Japanese American World War II Story.” This event requires a special event ticket. Register Here.
