Live at the Library to Feature Annie Leibovitz, Sean Doolittle of Washington Nationals in June
Additional Events will Celebrate Pride Month and Juneteenth
The Library of Congress continues its new Thursday evening series Live at the Library featuring special conversations with photographer Annie Leibovitz, baseball player and bookstore fan Sean Doolittle and more in June.
On Thursday evenings the Library’s Thomas Jefferson Building and all exhibitions are open for extended hours from 5 to 8 p.m. Visitors are invited to enjoy happy hour drinks and food available for purchase in the Great Hall overlooking the Capitol and the Thomas Jefferson Building’s beautiful architecture while immersing themselves in the Library’s exhibits, collections and programs. The series will regularly feature special conversations, music, performances, films and workshops that showcase the broad range of holdings at the national library.
Free timed-entry passes for Live at the Library are available at loc.gov/visit. Advance registration is encouraged for some individual programs noted below.
Live at the Library Programming Highlights for June
June 2: Enjoy a performance from the Mivos Quartet in the Coolidge Auditorium at 8 p.m. Free concert tickets are available here. Explore the Live at the Library of Awesome collections display, featuring collections celebrating Asian mythology, and items on the history of entertainment and pop culture from the Library’s comic book collections.
June 9: Join the Library in Celebrating Pride Month with a discussion from journalist James Kirchick on his new book, “Secret City: The Hidden History of Gay Washington,” and Washington Post writer Jonathan Capehart at 7 p.m. in the Coolidge Auditorium. Visitors can also explore Library collection items that Kirchick consulted in researching his book.
June 16: Celebrate Juneteenth with the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Ranky Tanky with an exuberant fusion of jazz, blues, gospel and R&B arrangements of traditional Gullah music from America’s Southeast at 8 p.m. in the Coolidge Auditorium. Free concert tickets are available here. Explore a display of Library collections honoring the legacy of enslaved peoples and celebrating emancipation and Black culture in America in the Great Hall.
June 23: Take a closer look at photography during An Evening with Annie Leibovitz at 7 p.m. in the Coolidge Auditorium. Join one of the most influential photographers of our time to mark the publication of “Wonderland,” a collection of images from Leibovitz’s encounters with fashion over five decades. To accompany the conversation, explore the Library’s new exhibit, “Not an Ostrich: And Other Images from America’s Library.”
June 30: Washington Nationals pitcher Sean Doolittle and Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden discuss Doolittle’s love for books, his passion for reading and his role as the team’s Summer Reading Ambassador at 7 p.m. in the Coolidge Auditorium. Explore a display featuring historic baseball images and treasures from the Library’s collections. Enjoy performances from members of the U.S. Air Force Band's Airmen of Note in the Great Hall.
